[How-To] How to fix ‘Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE)’ Error

May 10, 10 • How To18 Comments

While trying to connect my friends new laptop to my wifi modem, I encountered some strange error messages:

Connecting thru WAN Miniport (PPPOE)…
Error 651: The modem has reported an error.

“Error Connecting to Verizon Online…
Connecting through WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
Error 678: The remote computer did not respond…”

As usual searched the net to find an answer, But I found a variety of solutions. Amoungst which only one worked for me:

  • Goto Start -> Control Panel -> Internet Options
  • Under “Connections” tab, check the box, “Never dial a connection”,
  • Click “Apply” and then OK.
  • Done

Note that the above procedure is for windows 7 OS. It may deffer depending on your OS version.

Happy Browsing.. ;)

Didn’t work. I’m getting teh error 651 but I’m thinking mine might actually be a hardware problem.

Thank you!   We switched the wireless service from AT&T to Verizon, and ever since we get that error message when trying to connect to the internet.  Verizon said it was a Windows issue.  I fould your fix while on the phone with them today.  It worked!  FYI, I have Windows XP Professional on my notebook.08_17_2011

I have this problem, only it’s caused by a recent Windows update. This unfortunately didn’t work because my connections were already set to “Never Dial a Connection” :C

That’s great. It stops the pop up error from appearing but does not solve the connection problem. Still offline on the windows partition of my Macbook pro. :-(
