
25 years ago, today (March 15 – 1985), the first .com internet domain name: symbolics.com was registered by a massachusetts computer systems firm. That domain was followed by BBN.com and think.com which is now owned by Oracle and redirects to thinkquest.org.
The .com Domains were actually implemented in January 1985, however, people back then to give it more than 2 months before they could actually start booking the domains.
Verisign has launched 25yearsof.com to celebrate this historic acheivement of the .com. Versign has created an incredible website with news, history, videos and celebrations throughout 2010.
In 1985, only six a .com domains waere registered, one of six top-level domain names created a year earlier in a reorganization of the early Internet’s naming bureaucracy. At the time, .cor (short for corporate) almost beat .com as the designation for commercial Internet addresses.
It is also to be noted that there are 184 Million Active Registered Domains on the Internet, almost 70,000 new domains are registered everyday. In addition to that, there are a total of more than 3 billion registered IP addresses across the world.
